Description

About this book…
Bernard Berenson’s famous essays on the Venetian, Florentine, Central and North Italian painters of the Renaissance first appeared between 1894 and 1907. It is a testimonial to the soundness of his judgment that they have since taken their place among the great writings of art criticism and that they were only recently described as
‘incomparably the best introduction in any language to any school of painting’ Times Literary Supplement. The Phaidon edition reproduces all of the pictures discussed at any length.
Bernard Berenson was one of the most famous and remarkable connoisseurs of Italian art of the past century. After several prolonged trips to Italy, he settled in Florence, where he lived for the greater part of his life, and where he died in 1959. Among his publications are his lists of Venetian, Florentine, Central and North Italian Renaissance paintings, and his Drawings of the Florentine Painters. cover design by Edward Gould
